Constitution Center : Sculpture by Richard Deutsch

Legacy is a sculpture for a large interior courtyard in an historic Edward Durell Stone designed building two blocks off the Washington DC Mall. In an effort to significantly update the building, developers wanted to pay tribute to the architect and to the legacy of the original owner David Nassif. Richard Deutsch was invited to design a major focal point sculpture for the interior courtyard. Drawing references from the shape of the building with its mass and volume, he arrived at a dynamic scheme to carry the site while paying tribute to its former incarnation. Legacy’s four interlocking sculptural elements reflect the four dominant bays of the former building and the striated vertical stones give memory to the old marble facade.
