Fragments is a sculpture for a mixed-use development at 631 Folsom Street in San Francisco. The physical conditions of the site were integral to the sculpture’s design. A condominium with ground-floor retail and a restaurant, the development is adjacent to the plaza of AT&T. It was important to create an artwork that was welcoming to both the inhabitants of the 631 Folsom building and inclusive of their urban neighbors.
Richard Deutsch separated the two properties with a large 50’ water feature, which is equally accessible from both sides. Five fragmented white marble sculptural forms are set within the water feature creating a dynamic see-through with animated negative spaces or windows between the forms. The concept of the sculpture stems from the artist’s long-held fascination with fragmented ruins. Central to his work is an exploration of forms in relation to time, age, erosion and loss and the questions that this dialog evokes. The sculpture Fragments pose these questions.
